Read full description of the books Hagridden:I'm not always a big fan of historical fiction because so many books like that don't do much more than fictionalize a narrative life around a historical account. Yeah, it might give me a different picture of what life was like during a particular time, but if I want just the history I'll read a historical account. From a novel I want more. However, I was excited about this one because after reading "Box Cutters" I knew Snoek-Brown would give me more. The historical time and place come alive for me in this book, the devastation that is left in rural Louisiana at the end of the Civil War, but the darkness that is always hiding below the surface of humanity comes to such a bigger life. It's something to see, an enthralling use of a unique setting to explore who people can end up being. The result is unsettlingly wonderful, something I wouldn't have imagined but can't manage to refute. This definitely isn't something you'd find in your school history book.
