Setting: 1863 in Gettysburg, PA
POV: Narrator (focus on Abraham Lincoln)
Summary: This book is a historical true account based on Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and his journey leading up to that memorable speech in history is the main focus of the book. In this book Abraham Lincoln is currently the President and he is fighting two important battles, Civil War and slavery. Lincoln has a lot of pressure on him to win the Civil War and permanently end slavery. As the battles between the North and South continued the victory seemed to be nearing the South at the final battle, Battle of Gettysburg, the North won. A final win to end the war was finally accomplished however many died in the process, especially at the Battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln was asked to deliver a speech at the cemetery honoring all that passed during this last battle. Even though he still had many things to take care of, he made time to go to the Gettysburg cemetery and he gave a short, but heartfelt speech.
Classroom uses/theme: I would use this book in my primary classroom because it’s a historical true account of Abraham Lincoln. It highlights his most critical time as a President when he was trying to free the slaves and win the Civil War. Regardless of all the tasks he was required to complete, Lincoln made time to deliver his short, but famous speech at the Gettysburg cemetery. I would use this book on a literature unit surrounding Historical Figures or a social studies unit on the Civil War.
