Read full description of the books Shadow Walker:As far as Connie Mason's older stories go, this one is a winner. The characters aren't completely reprehensible, there's no definitive rape (definitely some forced seduction though) and the angst is so thick you could cut it with a knife. That's not to say that this is quality literature or that the language isn't flowery or the characters occasionally stupid. I mean, the main Hero pretty much has multiple personality disorder. Is he Cole Webster or Shadow Walker and why does he talk about the other as though he were a different person? In either personality he mourns his dead wife Morning Mist and swears he will never love again.
So basically, Cole comes across Dawn, the virgin wife of an outlaw and he takes her virginity and her livelihood. Feeling guilty, he drags her along to the Sioux so she can choose another husband, all the while giving her lots of lovings. While there, Dawn tries to make a choice, but Shadow Walker's presence makes it hard to decide. She's in love with him but he will not love her and she won't accept anything less. And I appreciate a heroine who, for once, will not be swayed by anything less than what she wants. She is forced to marry him in a Sioux ceremony though after she miscarries. So then he drags her back to his sister's house so he can dump her there and be on his way. And Dawn calls him for the asshole he's being. I love it! He still leaves and then Dawn gets a bit TSTL and a lot bitter. Things wrap up from there, but I don't feel like Cole had to do nearly enough groveling to get what he wanted. I love that Dawn was such a strong heroine and had such limited bullshit tolerance...even if she did love a guy whose head was buried pretty far up his own ass.
Also weird - at least 3 separate characters with no prior interaction with each other said the exact same thing to Cole about memories not keeping him warm at night. A Sioux warrior, a Railroad Agent and a Southern Belle turned wife of a lumber magnate. It bugged me a bit.
